Wednesday 14th August - walk ***** – Snape to Iken Church – sunny
periods and hot.
My son Robert had given me a hot air balloon flight which was booked for
today, Mag is not keen on coming with me so I asked a friend of 40 year
Neil but sadly the it was cancelled last night due to low cloud, so have
booked again for my birthday on October 6th but we are not holding our
breath that it wont be cancelled again! Mag then told me that Robert, his
partner Hannah and Grandson Arlo who were in Liverpool had booked a
campsite in Halesworth in Suffolk so they could come and wave us off at 6
in the morning, such a shame that it didn’t work out:( Every cloud has a
silver lining as we could now spend the day with them and agreed to meet up
at Snape Maltings at 11.30, so I packed a picnic for all and we set off in
the van, it’s a long trip for us these days and we meet up in the
over-spill car-park behind the Maltings, parking under a tree for the shade
as the sun was coming out and it was getting hot! We then thought we would
have a walk along the water to Iken Church but first headed over to so the
old barge near the bridge, spotting loads of large mullet and two big carp
and found the launching spot for stand up paddle boards which they actually
made us of the next day! We then set off along the lovely path, found some
sweetcorn fields which Arlo had great fun running through, we crossed
several wooden walkways which we call Duck boarding past the dead trees in
the reeds. There was several little jetties out into the mud and places you
could hire canoes, Arlo loved plaing in the mud and it looked like he had
brown socks! We should have turned here but carried onto Iken Church which
is a bit of an anti-climax but at least we could wash Arlos legs with water
butt water! Then all we had to do was walk the two and a half miles back,
Arlo did so well to make it with no moans, top lad he is:) We then enjoyed
our picnic at 3.10 in the shade next to our van before driving the short
distance to Aldeburgh and parked by the beach near the famous metal shell
sculpture which is a amazing and I had loads of fun climbing all over it
before moving closer to the sea which was quite rough with waves breaking
up the shingle. Arlo and I had a paddle before Hannah put her swimming
costume on, she loves swimming in the sea and was joined by Arlo. Things
were going well until they were hit by three big waves, disappearing
completely at one point, Arlo had a few tears but Hannah continued swimming
for ages! We then drove through the quaint Aldeburgh where they were
putting up bunting for the famous carnival next Monday and there was a huge
que at both famous fish and chip shops! We continued to the large clover
Martello tower at Slaughden where it was regatta week and there must have
been a 100 dinghies racing in the river! What a top day we had, maybe
walked to far but we all survived and will see the family again at the
weekend before they head for home. Robert then heard he was lucky enough to
get a ticket to which Ipswich Towns first match in the premership against
Liverpool, exciting times!
